9th Doctor

Today our university released us from classes all day with the excuse that we must be advised before class registrations. Those of us who were either smart, lucky, or both managed to have the sessions early and, therefore, have the day to do as we please. My friends and I decided to spend our day making brownies and enjoying a Doctor Who marathon. So, of course, my outfits will be Doctor Who-ified for the next few days. Today I chose my favorite Doctor: Christopher Eccleston.

Recipe for the ninth Doctor:
1 Leather Jacket
1 Dark Toned Shirt
1 Set of Rose Tyler inspired jewelry
and
1 Angsty Know-it-all Attitude

Butterflies!

Today's inspiration came from the colors in this butterfly  pin and the unique blue green in these earrings. I have wanted to wear these earrings for a long time, but always had such a terrible time trying to match them to an ensemble. I found the same color in this pin and decided to try bringing them together with a lavender sweater. I pulled out some neutral pieces- jeans, grey blazer, and tan flats- and created an outfit that was business professional, colorful, and fantastic! I was actually surprised to get a compliment on my blazer, which, until today, I had tried to avoid wearing. I bought it for a few dollars at a thrift store as a staple item for "professional emergencies". However, I will try to find more opportunities to wear it from here on out. :)

Frumpy Friday

This past Friday I had to make another trip to visit a possible internship site. I still wanted to keep up with my effort to wear blue all week. Between you and me, I was never going to work at this location and the visit was more of a formality. I looked presentable, but professionalism wasn't necessarily my aim since I also had classes to attend on Friday.

I might have been wearing a t-shirt, but I assumed that a sweater vest and modest length skirt would be more that enough to imply that I am a studious individual (it was all I could do not to pull out my fake glasses for the occasion). Black flats were great for touring and because a trip off campus meant I would need something a little more adult than my book bag, so I was able to pull out my black Coach bag (courtesy of Goodwill).

After a week of blue I only have a few more articles left to wear before my deadline in June and I will be pulling those out for warmer weather :)

Bright Blue!

Yesterday I actually managed to wear two blue items at once!
1. The bright blue cardigan
2. The tank top w/ royal blue dots

It was 3 o'clock in the morning when I paired it with the red accessories. I probably never would have done that if I had been thinking clearly, but I'm glad I did :) I got soooo many compliments on this one. The red lipstick was a nice extra touch as well.

Tons of Turquoise

I know that turquoise is not considered by everyone to be "blue" but that's how the color is arranged in my closet. Today I had another internship interview so I pulled out my watch and grown up shoes : P

I'm so sad! I looked down at today at lunch and noticed one of the buttons off my jacket was sitting on the seat next to me! It was one of three missing buttons, the others of which were nowhere to be found, and two more fell off as the day progressed. There is a clothing makeover post in your future.

Week of Blue

As I have said before, this semester has been dedicated to wearing every article of clothing I own by the end of June. So far I am doing pretty well, but this past week or so I have been pulling the same clothes out of my closet. Said closet is- for the first time ever- arranged by color. Over the next month or two I will be dedicating each week to a new color. My goal is not to be entirely decked out in one color, but to wear one "new" article of clothing from that color category each day.

This week's color is BLUE, because I have noticed it seems to be the color I wear least.

For the first time this winter, the weather has been nasty and dreary so today was a bit more relaxed. I started with my blue hooded sweater/tunic/thing (with elbow patches :) ) and then choose my waterproof hiking boots and brown leather ball cap for warmth and waterproofing. The rest just kind of fell together the next morning.

Vagina Monologues

This year I participated in my university's production of The Vagina Monologues, an international cooperative effort to bring awareness to and end violence against women. The monologues address topics of rape, female circumcision, male oppression, and even the female repression of sexual topics and ideas.

Our costumes for this project came out of our own closets: all black with accents of either pink or red. Since red is my favorite color, the choice was obvious. I decided that I would strive for a sort of French sophistication. The wide leg pants hide the shape of my thighs while simultaneously keeping me warm in our freezing venue. The vest gives me a higher waistline to shorten my torso and give some length to my inordinately short legs. My hair was pulled back and the ends of the scarf were thrown over my shoulder to give the outfit a more airy "floaty" feel. The pin was required closing night... otherwise I wouldn't have worn it. (Forgive the blurriness of the photo. I ripped it from facebook and cropped it down.)

Because the production is built primarily on the spoken word rather than on movement and blocking I pulled all the focus to my face by keeping almost all of my colored accents around my face and wearing a vest with a curved, scooping neckline instead of a pointed, diving neckline. Mission Completed.

Purple and Prints

Today I decided to experiment a bit with colors that I don't normally combine: purple and mint green. I also worked a bit with prints while I usually see clothing combinations in solid colors. I received tons of compliments on this outfit and, while I normally "expect" them, most of these caught me off guard. This ensemble didn't strike me as anything special; one of the key pieces is a Hanes sweatshirt, come on! I will definitely be wearing this again, because it proved to be both super cute and super comfortable.

A Study in Purple

It's no mystery that I put almost no thought into that heading, and only slightly more thought into my outfit for the day. There is nothing easier to match that a monochromatic outfit, and today I was matching purple. It was a lot of purple and some black.

I know that this checked flannel shirt is clearly cut for a man, but it was the only pattern I could find that was the same. Mine had a lower neckline and a trimmed waist that made me look womanly shaped. I'm so glad I finally  had a chance to wear this hat! It's been hanging on my wall because I've been a chicken, but today I rocked it! I mixed some classier gemstone jewelry with cheap plastic earrings for an entirely unremarkable affect. I have yet to wear any of those accessories in over six months either.

I don't think I've mentioned this yet, but my goal for this semester is to wear every article of clothing I own at least once by the end of June. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! So if my outfits are ever extraordinarily awkward, it's because I'm fighting to keep an article of clothing that should probably be burned or donated.

Lazy Days

Because I have been so lazy the past few days, I haven't put a whole lot of effort into my ensembles. So instead of wasting time commenting on a not-so-hot outfit, I figured I might introduce you to my soundtrack for the week:

Rosi Golan's The Drifter and the Gypsy

If it's a sad rainy day and you don't like jazz, this is the perfect album. It's really soft and mellow with a light pop sound. Most of her music features piano accompaniment. Favorite song: "It's Been A Long Day"... Seriously. Check it out.

Stylin' in the Rain

One day one of these post titles will actually be clever, but until then...

Today was another rainy day in a land of rainy winters, so I decided to do two things to cheer myself up.
1. Layer- for warmth
2. Coordinate with my Umbrella- for cheer
Check. And Check. Too bad it actually stopped raining around noon. But I looked cute even without my signature accessory.

I wore some simple black flats that wouldn't be ruined by the rain and layered a baggy-necked short sleeve shirt over a long grey turtleneck and accented with sparkly but neutral jewelry. My personal grey pearls hang past my belly button even with a knot and my crystal studded flower hung perfectly inside the neckline. My favorite part was that I finally got up the nerve to wear my feathered head-band! Sadly it kept sliding off my head, so I eventually had to put it away.

I was in a meeting this afternoon and I girl just looked at me and said, "I love you." I was a little confused, because even though this happens often, I usually know what I've said or done to be "loved". I asked and she told me that if anyone else she knew tried wearing this outfit, it would look weird on them. But something about me just makes "different" outfits work. I am not sure how I feel about that, but I am glad that I pulled it off :)

Weekend: "Slacks-Off"

I had to take a quick trip home this weekend, and while I wasn't attending any major events, I knew I wouldn't just be sitting in my basement for two days. However, I didn't feel like taking the extra time to plan out any classy ensembles. Instead I packed a basic outfit (pants, shoes, jacket, jewelry) that I could mix with two t-shirts and scarves. It was the most low-key packing experience I've ever had.

All my basic pieces were neutral, primarily black. My jewelry and hair clip were yellows while my shirts and scarves were also brightly colored. I knew I needed some happy color in my life. It has been raining for the past week, and without color I might have thrown myself from a moving vehicle. In the absence of sunshine, color is a   passable and necessary substitution.

Monkey/Peacock Suit

Today I had an opportunity to tour a possible internship site. I do not own a suit yet, because I'm a poor college student, so I did the best with what I have. I would just like to be clear that all photos have been "borrowed" from other internet sources and the photos I show are close approximations. The biggest difference in the layout I put together today is the I wore a khaki vest instead of grey (the internet failed to come through on that one) but the cut is largely the same.

Boots and Vests are some of my favorite outfit pieces, so you have many vest/boot outfits to look forward to.

Flowers in her Hair

I didn't end up looking quite as sexy today as I normally do. I was cute! Don't get me wrong, but the ensemble was nothing spectacular. However, it was a bit "springy" (wishful thinking). The outfit consisted of a coral sweater with three-quarter length sleeves, a mint green scarf, yellow bead earrings, and... wait for it! Two adorable flower clips one of my girlfriends made me for Christmas.

My bangs have been getting long, so they have been a cute way to keep the hair out of my face and give hope to all who long for warm weather again! To make a little hope for yourself you can follow the length below to make these flowers. And then it is up to you whether you want to glue them to clips, bobby pins, or a headband. Happy Crafting!

Red Hot for Reds

I love clothes, probably more than is healthy. I put this outfit together last night, put it on this morning, looked and the mirror, and thought "I kinda look like a sexy mime." I felt great, but as I walked around my campus I felt like I stuck out way more than I intended to. My shoes made loud "pocking" sounds everywhere I went and apparently it isn't normal to wear bright colors during the winter... because everyone else was wearing black and brown.

I knew when I decided to dress nicely every day that it would be a lot more work, but I hoped to  look a bit more attractive. I didn't realize how self-conscious it would make me. I felt like people were judging me for being awesome. But I have decided that being awesome puts me above all that and I'm going to look hot tomorrow too ;)
